Who we are
Aural Pal is an app that helps students practise for the aural part of music exams: clapping the pulse, singing back short phrases, spotting changes and describing musical features. It is made by an independent developer in the United Kingdom.
What we collect
We do not collect any personal information. Aural Pal has no accounts, and it does not ask for your name, email address, age or location. It contains no advertising, no analytics and no tracking, and it does not share anything with other companies.
The microphone
Aural Pal asks for access to your microphone so it can hear you sing and clap and tell you how you did. While a test is listening, the sound from the microphone is analysed on your phone: the app works out the pitch of each note you sing and the timing of each clap. That sound is not saved, and it is never sent off your phone.
You can turn microphone access off at any time in your phone’s Settings. The listening and marking won’t work without it, but you can still choose your settings and use the parts of the app that don’t need it.
What stays on your phone
To make the app useful, it keeps a few things in its own storage on your device:
- your settings, such as your grade and whether your voice is higher or lower;
- a short record of each round you finish (the date, which test, the grade, whether it was practice, and the score), which is used for your progress and streak.
This information never leaves your phone through Aural Pal. If you use iCloud Backup, Apple includes the app’s storage in your phone’s backup, under Apple’s own privacy policy, so your progress can come with you to a new phone.
Deleting your information
To clear your scores and streak, open Settings in the app and tap Reset progress. Deleting the app removes everything it stored.
Children
Many people who use Aural Pal are children. Because the app collects no personal information, sends nothing anywhere and contains no ads or links to buy things, it is designed to be safe for them to use. We recommend that a parent or teacher helps younger children set it up.
Beta testing
If you are testing Aural Pal through Apple’s TestFlight, Apple may share crash reports and any feedback you choose to send with the developer, under Apple’s TestFlight terms. These do not include your singing or clapping.
Changes to this policy
If the app changes in a way that affects your privacy, for example by adding an optional account to sync progress between devices, we will update this page and the date at the top before that change is released.
